Map & Statistics
Topography
Mexico has more than six thousand miles of coastline, most of which is on the west coast, facing the Pacific Ocean. Land area of Mexico is omore than three quarters of a million square miles, and half a million square miles is mountainous. Mountain altitudes range from 3,000 to 18,000 feet. There are two major mountain ranges: the Sierra Madre Orental and the Sierra Madre Occidental. They meet just south of Mexico City, where the country narrows in width and features many extinct volcaoes. There are almost two dozen extinct volcano mountain peaks here over 10,000 feet, and two of them are over 17,000 feet high: Popocatepel and Iztaccihuatl. The highest peak is Pica de Orizaba, which is 18,885 feet high, and located in the state of Veracruz. There's a giant plateau between the East and West Sierra Madres, and this is where most of Mexico's 97.5 million inhabitants make their homes.
To the north, Mexico is bordered by the United States, and more than half of this border is defined by the Rio Grande. The border west of El Paso is defined by an imaginary line, where there is no river. This is the area where Mexico borders with New Mexico, Arizona and California. The entire border with the United States is 1,600 miles long. As you go south, Mexico narrows and is only 125 miles aross at the southern border with Buatemala, Belize and the Caribbean. The eastern border of Mexico is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico. There is also the peninsula of Baja California, which is separated from mainland Mexico by the Gulf of California. Baja is 800 miles long.
Population
Mexico is the world's largest Spanish-speaking country, and the population expands rapidly every year. More than half the country is under the age of 20, which is a remarkable statistic. There are about 125 people per square mile, which is almost double the population density of the United States. The overall feeling is not one of crowded conditions, since Mexicans like to live very close to their friends and family, in clusters in villages and cities. Mexico City is the world's largest city, with a population density of 40,000 people per square mile. Guadalajara is Mexico's next largest city, and they have 5 million people.
There are 31 states in The United States of Mexico, plus one federal district, much like our Washington D.C. The federal district is Mexico City and it's known as D.F. which stands for Distrito Federal.
